4 Easy Steps to Becoming a Vendor
1. Get Your Sales Tax Certificate

YOU MUST HAVE ONE. It is no longer possible to apply in person. You must do it online or through the mail. To do it online, go to nys-permits.org, click on Online Applications (on left side of the screen), click on “Taxation and Finance, Dept. of” (in blue section), right-click on “Certificate of Authority” on pull-down menu and tell your browser to open as a separate window or tab, click (double-click) “OK” on pop-up window, and you’ll get to the application. The NIC code that you should use (on page 2 of the application) is 454390.

You may have to click a couple of times. It takes a little bit of patience. You will get a confirmation email.

You may NOT work until you get the physical document in the mail (allow at least 3 weeks for this).

For mailing, you may download the form by using this link:

http://www.rjcom.com/production-center/downloads/dtf17_407.pdf

We have copies of this application in the office on Sunday. Their toll-free number is 1-800-698-2909; direct number is 518-485-2889.

This is what the certificate of authority looks like - be sure you have this document:

Q: List of Giftshops at Zoos with Monkeys ( Answered 5 out of 5 stars, 1 Comment )
Question
Subject: List of Giftshops at Zoos with Monkeys

Question ID: 76543

What are the names, emails, and phone numbers for the buyers or
managers of all Zoo Gift Shops in North America where the zoos have
primates and/or monkey exhibits?

Request for Question Clarification by rainbow-ga on 15 Oct 2002 00:57 PDT

Hi headmonk,
What I found is a site with the listings of all zoos in the US.
Clicking on each one will give you contact information for each zoo.
It doesn't tell whether they have primates and/or giftshops, but most
have a web site. I could give you the complete list of the zoos by
state with contact information if you decide this would be sufficient.
Let me know what you decide, so I can get right on it.
Regards,
rainbow

Clarification of Question by headmonk-ga on 15 Oct 2002 08:17 PDT

The critical element is the name of the buyer or manager of zoo gift
shop. To have any chance of a successful solicitation one needs that
personal element.

Request for Question Clarification by knowledge_seeker-ga on 15 Oct 2002 09:06 PDT

Hi there headmonk!

Ok, I've been researching your question for the last hour or so and
have found that most large zoos, aquariums, and museums do not operate
their own gift shops. Instead they contract other companies to do that
for them. The buyer is not necessarily a manager on-site (at the zoo)
but may be an employee of the contracted company, often located at a
headquarters. I other words, one buyer would be ordering for a variety
of zoos.

I have begun a list of some of the companies that provide such
services. If I can make it fairly comprehensive, is this list
something that you would accept as an answer?

Let me know --

-K~

Clarification of Question by headmonk-ga on 15 Oct 2002 10:31 PDT

K - Yes, a list of such contacts at the companies that manage the zoo
shops would be sufficient - obviously the more the merrier. I would
hope that it would include the zoos covered by such companies.

Hi again headmonk,

Alright, I’ve done it!

The first list below constitutes all of the companies that I could
find that operate gift shops for zoos.

Below that I’ve listed a number of individual gift shop managers and
buyers that I found during my travels online. Finding them one-by-one
that way would be an endless process, but I figured I’d give you a
list to start with.

I also found that there are many companies that specialize in
supplying merchandise to zoo gift shops. I’m assuming you have product
you are trying to market. Another approach would be to market to the
merchandise suppliers. I’ve given you info on a few merchandisers and
a link to a directory of more. Not knowing exactly what your product
is, I wasn’t specific in the kind of merchandise I focused on.

And finally, there are some links at the bottom to other informational
sites I thought might interest you. The American Zoo & Aquarium
Association is a valuable resource for finding zoos, addresses,
contact people, and other businesses that cater to zoos. I’ve given
you a link to their main site, to their zoo list, and to an article
that seems pertinent to your project.

a force to be reckoned with. The buying power represented by just a

So that should give you a good start in reaching gift shop managers
and/or buyers for zoos. Oh, and by the way, I think we can assume for
the larger zoos that wod-ga is correct, they will all have monkeys or
primates of some sort.

If anything I’ve said isn’t clear, please feel free to ask for
clarification.

Most zoos will have some kind of monkey or other. It's a human thing..
they like to see their cousins :) As for gift shops, that's another
thing. But most Zoos also have gift shops.

Central Park Zoo

Central Park Zoo New York stands out as a gem among New York City attractions. Located in New York Citys Central Park at Fifth Avenue and 64th Street, Central Park Zoo is open 365 days a year and is popular with kids and families of all ages. An entire day can be made out of combining trips to both Central Park and this cutting-edge New York zoo within its boundaries.

The history of this New York zoo is as more of an animal collection---a menagerie---that included exotic animals given as gifts from all over the world. Once incorporated in the late 19th century as The Central Park Menagerie, it became the countrys second publicly-owned zoo, after the 1859 founding of The Philadelphia Zoo. Throughout the following century and beyond, this New York zoo continued to acquire various animal gifts from around the world, and its animal housing became more and more dilapidated over the years. In 1980, the Wildlife Conservation Society signed an agreement with the City of New York to renovate and operate the zoo for the Department of Parks and Recreation. Construction began in 1985.

Today Central Park Zoo New York is operated by the Wildlife Conservation Society, and is an example of cutting-edge habitat design. With renovation completed in 1988, Central Park Zoo beckons visitors from all over the world. It strives to replicate as closely as possible animals natural habitats, and includes tropical, temperate, and polar/arctic exhibits. Zoo educational programs teach children all about animals and their preservation, and offer regularly scheduled presentations for both children and their parents. Central Park Zoo operates endangered breeding programs, and works to increase the numbers of red pandas, tamarin monkeys, Wyoming toads, and thick-billed parrots.

Central Park Zoo New York is located at 830 Fifth Avenue, and is handicapped-accessible. Dining options include the Leaping Frog Café, which offers kid-friendly menu items and an educational atmosphere, and zoo visitors can also stop by Zootique Central Park, the official gift shop at Central Park Zoo.

The Wildlife Conservation Society also operates the Prospect Park Zoo in Brooklyn and The Queens Zoo in Flushing, and these together make for a highlight among New York tourist attractions.

TIPS FOR WILDLIFE-
FRIENDLY LIVING

Warm house, cool planet

With fall here, it’s time to think about how to keep your home warm enough for winter, without putting too much of a tax on your wallet, or the planet. Seal any openings to the outside, like window leaks or gaps between floors and walls, and consider installing insulation. New York City offers “Waste Less” tips for improving your home heating systems.

PEOPLE MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Rocking the BoatRocking the Boat uses the uncommon mediums of traditional wooden boatbuilding and on-water education to help young people in the South Bronx succeed in life. Five levels of community and youth development programs operate during the fall and spring academic semesters and over the summer. The programs directly serve over 2,500 students and community members. WCS supports the participants' work to learn about and restore the Bronx River, which includes monitoring local oyster reefs, fish, and salt marshes.

SAVING WILDLIFE
THE BIRDS OF
ALASKA
Climate change reshapes an Arctic nursery
When most people think of the Arctic coastal plain, they picture a big, flat place. Dr. Steve Zack, coordinator of the Arctic Program for WCS, says the image isn't far off. But, he adds, "What's plain, by general description, is anything but."

Steve Zack Interview

Watch an interview with Dr. Zack on his work to conserve North America's greatest migration spectacle.

Watch the Video
During the short Arctic Alaskan summer, Zack arrives in time with millions of migrating birds that come to breed. On this fertile tundra, he witnesses every type of bird courtship, from the lifetime pair bonds of swans to the "annual monogamy" of ducks. In shorebirds called phalaropes, Zack notes that the females have no parenting role except to provide a variety of potential fathers with a nest of eggs. On the opposite end of the spectrum, in buff-breasted sandpipers, males try to pique the interest of females with fancy displays.

"Either they're lucky or they're not," says Zack, "but after consorting with the females, they'll take off and fly all the way back to southern South America."

Though Zack counts on seeing these winged courtships each summer, when and where he will see them is less certain. Climate change is forcing birds to migrate north almost a full day earlier each summer, impacting long-ingrained seasonal rhythms. Rising seas flood fresh-water marshes and dry out lakes and ponds that the birds depend on for food. Zack and his colleagues are working to study the climate trends on the roof of the world, and to identify key areas for its conservation.

PHOTO OF THE MONTH

Bighorn Sheep by Julie Larsen Maher
Julie Larsen Maher ©WCS
Two hundred years ago out here in Yellowstone, bighorn sheep were a common sight. Today, after decades of overhunting, competition with livestock, and habitat loss, just a couple hundred remain in the park. On an afternoon hike through the Lamar Valley, we get a lucky glimpse of a group of bighorn rams at rest. This one doesn't seem fazed by his human observers. I abide by the park's photography rules, use my long telephoto lens, and stay back 25 yards. The sheep seems to be giving me a smile to say I got it right.

SAVING WILD PLACES SPOTLIGHT

Redwoods by Julie Larsen Maher
©Julie Larsen Maher
Earth's tallest forest–the redwoods of California–has inspired pioneers and explorers, speculators and scientists for generations. Not only are the redwoods some of the most massive living things on Earth, they are also among the oldest. But beginning with the days after the California Gold Rush in 1848, when America's appetite for timber began to grow, many of these ancient trees have been reduced to ancient stumps.

WCS's long history of field work in northern California began with a walk through the redwoods in 1917 by Henry Fairfield Osborn, one of our founders. In 2008, WCS conservationist J. Michael Fay undertook his own hike through the woods to continue a legacy of forest conservation.

The Queens Zoo, a tribute to American animals, opened to the public on June 25, 1992. It was the second of three "city zoos" to be renovated and operated by Wildlife Conservation Society, through a partnership with the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. Unlike the much older Central Park and Prospect Park zoos (which were renovated and reopened by WCS in 1988 and 1993, respectively), the Queens Zoo had only existed since 1968. That year, the "Flushing Meadows Zoo" opened on the grounds of the 1964 World's Fair. However, advances in zoo technology and animal management rapidly left the zoo in need of an update. The new zoo is the result of a $16 million reconstruction.

The $25.5 million stadium marked a new beginning for the young club that had played its first two years at the Polo Grounds. The stadium was originally to be called Flushing Meadow Park but was later named for the popular attorney, William A. Shea, who spearheaded the drive to bring National League baseball back to New York following the departure of the Dodgers and Giants in 1957. The architectural firm of Praeger-Kavanagh-Waterbury designed the stadium to be the first all-purpose facility capable of hosting baseball and football games, seating 55,300 for baseball and 60,000 for the New York Jets football team.
